About Marcus Webb
I’m the lead reviewer at Laser Engraver Expert. I’ve been building and running laser engravers out of my workshop in Denver, Colorado for the past six years — starting with a basic diode machine I bought to cut parts for a furniture side project, and slowly turning into the person my local makerspace calls when someone wants to know which machine to buy.
Over the past three years I’ve run formal hands-on tests on over 20 machines across the xTool, Sculpfun, Ortur, Glowforge, OMTech, and Thunder Laser lines. Every machine I review gets put through the same protocol: grayscale ramps on basswood and aluminum, cut tests on wood and acrylic, timed assembly from unboxing to first engrave, and at least 60 hours of sustained use before I write a word.
I’m not a paid spokesperson for any brand. I buy or borrow machines the same way you would. When something is genuinely good, I say so. When it’s overpriced or overhyped, I say that too.
What I Focus On
Most laser engraver reviews stop at specs. I care about what actually happens when you use the machine for real work:
- Real engraving quality — not manufacturer samples, but standardized ramp tests I run myself
- Honest cut performance — the speeds and pass counts that actually get clean edges, not the best-case numbers in the manual
- Setup friction — how long it actually takes from box to first job, and where the frustrations are
- Long-term reliability — what changes after 60 hours of use that nobody talks about at launch
Background
- 6 years hands-on with diode, CO2, and fiber laser systems
- Active member of Denver Makerspace; helped advise equipment purchases for their shared fabrication room
- Background in woodworking and custom furniture — laser engraving started as a tool, became the focus
- Regular contributor to r/lasercutting discussions on machine comparisons and settings
- All reviews cross-referenced with community feedback from Reddit, xTool forums, and LightBurn user groups
Editorial Independence
Every review on this site reflects my honest assessment after hands-on testing. Affiliate commissions help keep this site running but have no influence on scores, rankings, or recommendations. A machine that underperforms gets a low score regardless of commission rate.
